Resources
At Holistic Health Midwifery, we do not offer clinical care or guidance for any one individual, but we help facilitate a holistic and integrative journey into and through our shared parenthood experience with a variety of multi-sensory learning experiences. We also want to point you in the right direction to resources on a variety of topics related our parenthood journey.
Baby Feeding. For some folks, breastfeeding is a term that seems to fit. For other folks, chest or body feeding might sound more comfortable. We may use these terms interchangeably, but want to encourage all our people to talk to your care providers about your preference for how to refer to your body anatomy, and your baby feeding journey. Likewise, breastmilk can also be used just as easily as saying human milk. How a postpartum person feeds their baby will be influences by many, many factors. Sometimes the choices made during pregnancy will manifest into reality, and then sometimes your feeding intentions and choices will end up looking very different in reality. Talking about fear, dreams, evidence-based practices, and support early on with your care team will help create an empowered experience, with one of many goals being to align your informed choices with reality when possible.
Here are some of my favorites places to start as you consider options, and want visual guides to supplement other education from your health care team. Regarding Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiatives, some hospitals but not all in the U.S. have this status - you could inquire while taking a tour of the unit. Know your breast or chest feeding allies, if that is your choice. I recommend having your chosen lactation consultant on speed dial too!

Post Partum Mood. We will speak mostly to postpartum mood, but another term is perinatal mood, which is more all encompassing of the larger time-line surrounding prenatal, delivery, and postpartum. Some folks may come into pregnancy with a history of a psychiatric or mood diagnosis, or may only know family or friends who mentioned a struggle. The fact remains that we are all at risk of struggling, so it is important to talk to your health care provider about questions and concerns you may have, and know where to find help urgently if needed. Here are some valuable and safe places to look. As always, people in crisis and who do not feel safe should go to the nearest emergency hospital or call a crisis hotline.
